Lee Michaels
Saturday 10AM-3PM

My story...
The name is Lee Michaels. I grew up in Fairfax and have lived in Virginia all my life. Although I am not a native of Richmond, I often visited the area in my travels and knew that someday I would live here (better late then never).

Some of my interests include travel, mostly by car. Gone are the days of hitchhiking in my sandals across some desolate piece of highway. I like record collecting, you know, those big pieces of vinyl called albums, 33's or 45's. Jazz, Blues, and Classic Rock are my preferences. I'll listen to anything once and many more times if it doesn't pop and skip. I have an interest in astronomy and meteorology. Always look to the sky! And of course, I like to keep up on current events.

On the subject of radio, I have been in the business for 20 years and love it. I have seen a lot of changes and there is no doubt I'll see many more. STAY POSITIVE!

Lee Michaels Recommends: Jefferson Starship - Blows Against The Empire
I grew up listening to all the great classic rock bands, The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, The Allman Brothers Band and many others. I went back into the collection recently to rediscover where I had been musically for the past forty some years and there is one album in particular that I have been very fond of for a long time, the first Jefferson Starship album, 'Blows Against The Empire'.

This is a collaboration of many artists: Paul Kantner, Grace Slick, Crosby, Stills and Nash, The Grateful Dead and many others. It is the only record album to win the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation in 1970. The Hugo Award is given every year for the best science fiction or fantasy works of the previous year.

The album's theme is quite extraordinary. Hijack a starship and travel to some utopian world to escape the madness of a dying planet caught up in its plastic politicians and its war machine. Grace Slick is still in her prime and her beautiful soaring vocals are up front. The guitar work of Paul Kantner is superb. Jerry Garcia at this point in time was still teaching himself to play the pedal steel guitar and comes across with some amazing sounds, to say the least. Listen to the cuts 'XM/Have You Seen The Stars Tonight?' and you'll know what I mean. The other amazing thing about this album is that it was produced before we had computers. I can not imagine how many hours were spent toiling over this marvelous record.—Be prepared for a journey you may not have expected with 'Blows Against The Empire'.
